Throughout my Fulbright, I’ve been trying to take weekend trips as much as possible to explore other parts of this huge and diverse country. On one of those weekend trips, I explored Hyderabad – the capital and largest city of Telangana, a state in South-Central India.

To make the most of my short time there, I booked a local guide for two days. On the first day, we explored Hyderabad’s heritage sites on the outskirts of the city and surrounding areas by car. On the second, we explored the Old City on foot, stopping frequently to marvel at historical architecture, talk to street vendors, and reflect at mosques and temples.

Below I share a few images of those temples and mosques – and an equally inspiring sculpture garden. Hyderabad has so much to see, and I hope these few images take you on a brief virtual journey there!

Chilkur Balaji Temple

This temple (also known as “Visa Balaji Temple’’), is one of the oldest Hindu temples in the state of Telengana – estimated to be more than 500 years old! It’s also a small temple, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in color!

Badshahi Ashurkhana Mosque

Built in 1594, Badshahi Ashurkhana is a monument, a mosque, and a mourning place used during a festival called Moharram. In addition to the religious significance of the site, its intricate tile designs and floral artwork inside are absolutely stunning!

NTR Sculpture Garden

A small (but very cool) urban park and sculpture garden next to Hussain Sagar lake, one of Hyderabad’s biggest tourist attractions.

Hyderabad “Part 2” coming soon!
