I’m very lucky to have experienced a lot of safari game drives during my travels. They’ve mostly been in Kenya with a few others in South Africa and Uganda. All of these safaris have been pretty extraordinary.

But there’s one thing safaris in India have that you can’t find on an African safari: TIGERS.
Royal Bengal Tigers, to be exact.

No matter which continent you’re on, safari game drives are basically always a crap shoot. You never know whether you’ll see any animals at all, let alone a big predator like a tiger (depends on the season, the weather, time of day, water availability, whether they’re hunting or resting, etc). So when you see a tiger within the first 15 minutes of entering the national park – walking directly toward you as you sit in an open-air Jeep, no less – you know it’s going to be a good drive!

I could fill this space with lots of interesting details about Ranthambore National Park, which is apparently one of the biggest and most renowned parks in India and once the former hunting grounds of Maharajas from Jaipur. But instead, I’ll just share a few photos (and one very shaky video) to give you a glimpse into the experience.

A tiger approaches!

And finally, here’s the video I mentioned above. Yes, it’s pretty shaky. But what can you do when the driver decides the tiger is getting too close and throws the Jeep into reverse suddenly? I’m not the Global-Minded Videographer, after all. 🙂

It is so wonderful to experience this through your lens and eyes! You could probably even make the woodchucks and bunnies in my yard look interesting!
